A guide to pile materials, knot density and regional styles.

Choosing a Persian carpet is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make for your home. A handmade Persian carpet carries centuries of tradition and materials that improve with age.

Understanding Materials

The three principal materials are wool, silk, and cotton. Wool is durable and naturally stain-resistant. Silk produces intricate patterns with a characteristic lustre.

Knot Density

Knot density is measured in knots per square inch. Fine city carpets from Tabriz or Isfahan can exceed 500 KPSI. Higher density allows for more detailed patterns.

Regional Styles

Tabriz is known for medallion designs. Isfahan produces refined floral patterns. Qum specialises in pure silk pieces of extraordinary fineness.
